Sometime ago I came across an internet discussion on the pros and cons of immortality. Yes, you read that right. Immortality, from a human perspective looks like the coolest thing ever, until you look deeper – at least according to one of the parties involved in the discussion. Being alive forever would provide enough time to do whatever one wanted, but one of the trade-offs cited was the loss of friends and loved ones who the immortal person would outlive. Imagine watching every single person you ever love pass away while you remain behind. Another con cited was boredom, having done everything exciting in every imaginable interesting way, leaving you with nothing but to wish for death.
As I read through the discussion, I thought about God and
Heaven. God is immortal. He has and will always be living, and so will we when
we get to Heaven. At a casual glance, the trade-offs cited above would seem
true, but they aren’t.
First of all, God is good. And that’s not a cliché.
You see, boredom is not a good thing; no trade-off is a good
thing in a general sense. God couldn’t possibly be having some bad days and
still be good. Surely someone would have noticed by now.
I know God doesn’t get bored, because He still makes beautiful
stuff all day. Did you hear that newborn cry? Did you see how the rain dropped
off that Hibiscus flower? Did you feel the breeze last night when you stepped
out for a moment?
God’s goodness assures me that all He has planned for me are
good. Besides, God is infinite, and so we couldn’t possibly exhaust the knowledge
of Him if we tried for all eternity. And God, He is interesting!
There is no possible downside to the goodness of God. Its safe to stick
with Him.
