A few years ago I stumbled upon a web forum that wasn’t so
popular at the time. The content on the site was crowd sourced, i.e. registered
members posted information they thought others would like to read. Naturally,
posted content would be verified by the many users who viewed said content, and
so only credible information (facts) made it to the front page.
I got so engrossed in reading the exciting new stuff on the
site every day, I became addicted. There was no end to new information with
backing sources and users excitedly discussing the content. It was like access
to unlimited knowledge, for free. And I loved learning!
However, over time I came to see that even a crowd of intellectuals is not infallible,
as trusted people who had previously been known for verifiable content began to
spread misinformation, and projecting their own opinions as fact. Of course the
crowd followed, not realizing the deceit, and hundreds of thousands of people
were misled. Even the media fell victim, as the site was quite popular by then.
This was a good lesson for me because I realized that fact
sometimes wasn’t fact, talk less of
truth. One dictionary describes fact as “reality
agreed upon by consensus”. This was really startling for me, because it
meant the facts I knew were based on the experiences of fallible humans,
including me.
God made the world. Everything
that exists: past, present and future, exist because He made them to!
God defines reality.
So why would I base my knowledge on anything short of the one who created
knowledge?
“The world's a huge stockpile of GOD-wonders
and God-thoughts. Nothing and no one comes close to [Him]! I start talking
about [Him], telling what I know, and quickly run out of words. Neither numbers
nor words account for [Him].”1
Throughout
history there have been many wise men: Scholars, philosophers, scientists,
programmers… but they all have one thing in common: they come and go. They may
break frontiers for a while, but there is always someone smarter who builds on
their knowledge, or proves them wrong.
God isn’t like that.
“Don't you know anything? Haven't you been
listening? GOD doesn't come and go. God
lasts. He's Creator of all you can see or imagine. He doesn't get tired
out, doesn't pause to catch his breath. And He knows everything, inside and out.”2
So can you
imagine a world where reality isn’t based on a consensus, but on the rules of
this good God? This is that world, but only those who believe are living the
life.
God isn’t outdated
in understanding, He is up to date. In fact, the world is ever trying to catch
up to Him, but never does.
There’s no better
source of knowledge and understanding than the
Source. His understanding is
limitless!
