A short while ago my friend was asking me about the optimum
age for childbirth. I let her know that even medicine cannot exactly predict an
optimum age, just a range. The factors responsible for a viable conception,
pregnancy, childbirth and subsequent life of a person are just too many to be
defined by a single factor as age. However, we know that at some point the
likelihood of having a normal pregnancy begins to dwindle, approaching zero.
Elizabeth was not a young woman. She wasn’t even
middle-aged, she was old. Very old. She must have been above 60. There are so many
thoughts running through my mind as I write: the possible complications that
could arise if a 60yr old woman were to miraculously get pregnant; the risk to
the child as well as to the mother, especially for a primipara…
I know God had thought about all those and some more, He
figured it out before He broke the news to Elizabeth’s husband. However, John’s
human mind couldn’t even begin to imagine, so he was dumbfounded. Literally.
I really wonder how John convinced his wife to go to bed
with him, especially considering he couldn’t speak at that point, but somehow
it happened and Elizabeth conceived. By the time Mary was first told about this
development, Elizabeth was already six months pregnant!
Elizabeth’s story was used as an encouragement to Mary who
would go through an even ‘more impossible’ experience, resulting in the birth
of Jesus.
We find it difficult to believe God many times because we
weigh His words with our own wisdom and experience. But God is greater than all
of us. He is Almighty. His power is
infinite. Heck, He spoke this world into existence!
The only limit to experiencing such infinite power is our
own mind and our own will.
If you would just believe, you will see the greatness of
God.
Let us all, like Mary say, be it unto me according to Your word.
