It started out as a normal day. It must have, for Ananias
and his charming wife. They were upstanding citizens, Christians even. The
message of love and sharing must have pricked them when they heard it, and so
they decided to do something. I’m not sure where it pricked them, whether their
heart or their ego, but they did do something: they sold their property.
But then they realized the act would also prick their
pockets hard, so they came up with a smart
way out.
God must have been watching them, amused at their antics.
And while they plotted, He patiently waited for them to come round and do the
right thing.
But they didn’t.
Even when His Spirit spoke through Peter, confronting them with
an opportunity to confess, still they persisted in their downward spiral, and
to the ground they went.
I don’t believe taking their lives was a desirable thing for
God to do, it was just…inevitable.
No sin goes unpunished. If it were, God would only be an
unjust God, letting people get away with doing wrong. No sensible state let’s
criminals get away with crime, that is called injustice.
When we sin and then come to God repenting, the punishment
isn’t removed; it’s deferred to His Son – Jesus, who bore the ultimate punishment
for sin on behalf of everyone who believes in Him.
Barring that, God’s goodness will not make Him unjust to the
righteous by tolerating sin. He will surely punish, no matter who is involved.
