There’s a weight of guilt that comes upon our hearts when we
realize we have hurt or offended someone who loves us. It’s nigh impossible to
look into the eyes of one whose trust you have betrayed.
We may try to defend ourselves if they realize it first and come
to us with accusations; if they even hit us physically it doesn’t hurt so much
because we take it as requital. It’s like we have paid a debt, and so less
guilt is left on our shoulders. But when you offend a person over and over and
they never make an attempt at vengeance, when it’s obvious to you that they
know what you have been doing and still they don’t push you away, it’s
difficult to live with the guilt of hurting such people.
God loves us, and wants to be in an eternal relationship
with us. But His way of life seems such a high standard for us that we
disappoint Him, over and over.
He has provided all that we need to live like Him, and is
right there all the time waiting patiently for us to ask for His help, but we
don’t. We try to handle challenges ourselves and fail miserably.
Yet instead of learning our lessons, we rinse ourselves and
repeat, never making real progress but content with our backward concept of
living.
So the devil takes advantage of our ignorant ideals and
keeps us bound in the fetters of guilt, chained to the pillars of unforgiveness.
God assures us first, that as His children we should never
sin1. It’s not part of our makeup;
it was never part of our protein sequence. But if we do fall into sin, because
of His own faithfulness and righteousness He will always forgive us as long as
we admit our errors and ask for forgiveness2. There’s no better deal
than that.
He won’t just stop at forgiveness; He’ll take away the
punishment that would have come as a consequence of our unfaithfulness.
Yet the devil tells us it’s too good to be true and makes us
wallow in unforgiveness, waiting till we have served time in the prison of
guilt.
My dear, Jesus paid that price long ago3. And
while His offer doesn’t in any way reduce the weight of sin itself, His love
carries it from off our shoulders and lets us live in the presence of the goodness
of God, far away from the consequences of our mistakes and the shadows of our
pasts.
God is good; He forgives all
our sins!4
